A Farewell to Arms

It is a love story that happened on the Austrian Alps during the War World I. He was a Medical Doctor in the United States and went to Italy to join to the Italian army. The General in chief was waiting for thousand of soldiers. Once they had reached their camps, it would begin a big offensive. A lot of brigades from all places of Italy began to arrive to their camps. On these days, the Lieutenant knew a beautiful English nurse. They looked each other and could not hind their feelings. They were to a cover greenhouse and she could not resist to be seduced by him. The daylight surprised them and the destiny would seal their love forever. With the daybreak, a trumpet began to sound from the top of the hill. It was the beginning of the Italian offensive. In a short time, the main street was overwhelmed by troops and civilians. The civilians cheered the soldiers as they marched. They transported the heavy artillery with the mules, until the end of the path. The engineers tied the cannons to a rope, and run up it to the most proper places in the mountains. The German’s response was fast and began the bombardment. Several vehicles were reached by the bombs, killing the soldiers. It happened that the Medical Lieutenant, fell dawn wounded. His assistant drugged him to another vehicle. The truck began to run doing zigzag, He had been injured on his leg and his wound was very important. He was moved to the American Hospital. His Italian Colonel knew very well about the lieutenant’s girl friend and the English woman was assigned to the American Hospital. They were together again, and lived times of love and happiness. He was good again and decided to ask for a few days of vacations. He went with her sweetheart to Naples and they got married there. They spent unforgettable days together. He returned to his job and look for the Colonel, who informed him that the Italian army, had lost the battle and the Germans were counterattacking. The soldiers were completely demoralized and the Command in Chief had to create Military Courts to avoid the chaos. The most of the times soldiers and officers were founded guilty and condemned to face their execution. When, his friend the Colonel was condemned as a traitor. The Lieutenant reacted insulting the jury and they ordered his execution, without previous judgement. He cheated the guards and miraculously could escape. He and his wife run away from the place and went to the shore of Como’s lake. There was a small boat on the beach and they got in. He rowed looking for a safe place to be hidden. He saw plants which rose several inches over the water and went there. With the darkness, he sailed the whole night to the other shore. They reached the Swiss border and got in to the neutral country. They were very well welcome. Her wife was pregnant and he took her to the hospital. The doctor examined the woman very carefully. Finishing his job, the doctor told them that she was to give birth, the next morning. So she was interned immediately. The birth came really bud for the woman and he asked the doctor to save her wife before the baby. The doctor could not save the life of the woman. The lieutenant could not understand the dead of his wife. Tears of pain fell down by his cheeks. He had survived from the war and was alone to face his own loneliness.
